Abortion isn’t a “necessary evil.” It’s an objective good. It’s also kind, safe, routine and normal.
I don’t think abortion is “kind”. There is nothing kind about a woman having to abort a fetus due to unwanted/unplanned pregnancies, medical conditions and birth defects. Abortion shouldn’t be routine or normal, but to due to the lack of sex education and rape culture [in the U.S.] it is.
Women have been using contraceptives and abortifacients for literally all of recorded human history, and probably for longer, because intimacy and sex are profound, valuable, and wonderful features of the human condition. Because sex is profound, valuable and wonderful, human beings will continue to have it, and because we have yet to find a 100% effective method of reversible contraception, women will continue to experience unwanted pregnancies. Women will also continue to have wanted pregnancies during which they lose their job, or suffer major health problems, or have their partner walk out on them, or any number of things that can make a wanted pregnancy suddenly inviable. Pregnancy termination is not a bad thing. It is also not something that will ever be especially rare, even with universal health care, even with an infrastructural value on maternal labor, even with sexual justice and women’s liberation, because in all of human history it has never been especially rare. Abortion is kind because letting women who don’t want to be pregnant anymore stop being pregnant is kind.
Who benefits from making abortion shameful? Who benefits from “yes it should be legal, but it shouldnt be routine or normal”? Because it’s not women.
